Challenges Faced by Young Entrepreneurs in the South Caucasus

EU4Youth Team, June 3, 2024

The European Union (EU) has long recognized the importance of fostering entrepreneurship as a means of driving innovation, economic growth, and job creation. Through various programs aimed at supporting young entrepreneurs, the EU has provided countless opportunities for young people to develop the skills, knowledge, and networks necessary to succeed in the entrepreneurial landscape. Programs such as Erasmus for Young Entrepreneurs, internships, and apprenticeships have played a crucial role in helping young individuals across Europe and beyond to launch and scale their businesses. This article explores the range of EU programs available for young entrepreneurs, focusing on their impact, the opportunities they provide, and real data on their outcomes.

Erasmus for Young Entrepreneurs: Fostering Cross-Border Collaboration

One of the flagship EU programs for aspiring entrepreneurs is the Erasmus for Young Entrepreneurs (EYE) program. Launched in 2009, EYE is a cross-border exchange initiative that helps new or aspiring entrepreneurs acquire business skills by working alongside experienced entrepreneurs in another EU country. The program aims to foster entrepreneurship, competitiveness, internationalization, and growth of startups and SMEs throughout the EU.

Through EYE, young entrepreneurs can spend up to six months with a host entrepreneur, learning how to manage a business, improve their business plan, and gain insight into new markets. The program also encourages cross-border collaboration, helping entrepreneurs build international networks that are vital for business success in today’s globalized economy. According to the European Commission, by 2022, Erasmus for Young Entrepreneurs had facilitated over 10,000 exchanges, benefiting both new and experienced entrepreneurs across the EU and its neighboring countries.

A survey conducted by the European Commission showed that nearly 87% of participants reported significant improvements in their entrepreneurial skills after participating in the program, and 64% of new entrepreneurs went on to create their own businesses following their exchange. Moreover, 60% of participants reported that the program helped them access new international markets, underlining the program’s role in fostering cross-border business opportunities.

Erasmus+ and Entrepreneurial Learning

The Erasmus+ program, which is well-known for its student mobility and educational exchange opportunities, also plays a significant role in fostering entrepreneurial skills among young people. Erasmus+ focuses on education, training, youth, and sport, with a strong emphasis on entrepreneurship education and skills development. Through strategic partnerships between educational institutions, NGOs, and private companies, Erasmus+ supports the development of curricula and training programs that equip young people with the entrepreneurial skills needed for the future workforce.

The Youth on the Move initiative, a key component of Erasmus+, targets young people, including aspiring entrepreneurs, by providing internships, apprenticeships, and entrepreneurial education programs. The initiative encourages young people to gain hands-on experience in different sectors, helping them build practical skills that are essential for launching and managing a business.

The European Commission’s report on Erasmus+ indicates that between 2014 and 2020, the program supported over 4 million young people through mobility projects, many of which focused on entrepreneurship and skills development. The impact of Erasmus+ on entrepreneurship is particularly evident in its partnerships with universities and vocational schools, which develop tailored entrepreneurial training programs.

Apprenticeships and Internships: Preparing Young Entrepreneurs for Success

In addition to Erasmus and Erasmus+, the EU supports a wide range of apprenticeship and internship programs aimed at providing young people with the skills and experience necessary to succeed as entrepreneurs. The European Alliance for Apprenticeships (EAfA) is a key initiative that brings together governments, businesses, and social partners to promote apprenticeships across Europe. Apprenticeships are widely recognized as a valuable tool for developing entrepreneurial skills, as they provide young people with real-world experience in managing businesses, understanding market dynamics, and building professional networks.

Since its launch in 2013, the EAfA has supported over 900,000 apprenticeship offers across the EU, contributing to the employability of young people and the development of their entrepreneurial skills. Data from the European Centre for the Development of Vocational Training (Cedefop) shows that young people who participate in apprenticeships are significantly more likely to start their own businesses compared to those who have not benefited from such hands-on training.

Furthermore, the EU’s Youth Guarantee initiative, which aims to ensure that young people under 25 receive a quality offer of employment, further education, or training within four months of leaving education or becoming unemployed, has also contributed to the growth of entrepreneurship among young Europeans. The program encourages young people to explore entrepreneurship as a viable career option by providing access to entrepreneurship training and business support services.

In particular, the Youth Employment Initiative (YEI), which is part of the Youth Guarantee, has provided targeted support for young people in regions with particularly high levels of youth unemployment. The program has been instrumental in fostering entrepreneurship by offering training, mentorship, and access to finance for young people who wish to start their own businesses. By 2021, the Youth Employment Initiative had supported more than 2 million young people in accessing employment, education, or entrepreneurship opportunities [8].

The Role of the European Solidarity Corps

The European Solidarity Corps (ESC) is another EU initiative that promotes entrepreneurship among young people through internships, apprenticeships, and voluntary projects. While primarily focused on volunteering and solidarity projects, ESC also encourages young people to develop entrepreneurial initiatives that address social challenges in their communities. The program provides young entrepreneurs with funding, mentorship, and training to help them turn their social business ideas into reality.

Until 2021, more than 275,000 young people have registered for the program, and over 70,000 projects have been completed, many of which have been entrepreneurial initiatives focusing on areas such as social innovation, environmental sustainability, and digital inclusion.

EU Funding for Startups and Innovation

In addition to exchange programs and apprenticeships, the EU offers significant funding opportunities for young entrepreneurs through initiatives such as Horizon Europe and the European Innovation Council (EIC). Horizon Europe, the EU’s flagship research and innovation program, has a specific focus on supporting startups, SMEs, and young innovators. The EIC Accelerator, part of Horizon Europe, provides grants and equity investments to high-potential startups and SMEs, helping young entrepreneurs scale their businesses and bring innovative products to market.

Since its launch, the EIC Accelerator has supported over 5,000 startups and SMEs with a total budget of €10 billion, making it one of the largest innovation funding programs in the world. A significant portion of these beneficiaries are young entrepreneurs, particularly in the fields of technology, sustainability, and digital innovation [10].

Conclusion: Unlocking Opportunities for Young Entrepreneurs

The EU has created a comprehensive ecosystem of programs and initiatives designed to support young entrepreneurs in developing the skills, knowledge, and networks necessary for business success. Programs like Erasmus for Young Entrepreneurs, Erasmus+, Youth Employment Initiative, and the European Alliance for Apprenticeships have provided real-world experience, mentorship, and funding opportunities to thousands of young people across Europe. By fostering cross-border collaboration, promoting entrepreneurial education, and providing hands-on training through internships and apprenticeships, the EU is helping to unlock the full potential of young entrepreneurs.

As these programs continue to evolve, they will play a critical role in driving entrepreneurship, innovation, and economic growth across the EU, ensuring that young people have the tools and opportunities they need to succeed in the ever-changing global economy.
